The devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010 provides a unique opportunity to keep the world’s attention on ending Haiti’s extreme poverty with projects and programs that benefit all Haitians. The importance of soccer in the Haitian society and the game’s status as the country’s “favorite national pastime” make soccer and physical education programs effective tools for combatting Haiti’s development challenges such as extreme poverty, conflict, HIV/AIDS, and for helping achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Providing development opportunities will help fight poverty in Haiti. The sports industry, as well as the organization of large soccer events, create opportunities for employment. Soccer provides life skills essential for a productive life in society.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Soccer and physical education are an essential element of quality education. They promote positive values and skills which have a quick but lasting impact on young people. Soccer and physical education generally make school more attractive and improve attendance.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Increasing access for women and girls to physical education and soccer helps them build confidence and a stronger social integration. Involving girls in soccer alongside with boys can help overcome prejudice that often contribute to social vulnerability of women and girls in a given society.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goals 4 & 5: Reduce child mortality and improve maternal health
Soccer can be an effective means to provide women with a healthy lifestyle as well as to convey important messages as these goals are often related to empowerment of women and access to education.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 6: Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases
Soccer can help reach out to otherwise difficult to reach populations and provide positive role-models delivering prevention messages. Soccer, through its inclusiveness and mostly informal structure, can effectively assist in overcoming prejudice, stigma and discrimination by favoring improved social integration.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Soccer is ideal to raise awareness about the need to preserve the environment. The interdependency between the regular practice of soccer outdoor and the protection of the environment are obvious for all to realize.
Volunteer with HS4D-HYSP to help Haiti with Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
Soccer offers endless opportunities for innovative partnerships for development and can be used as a tool to build and foster partnerships between developed and developing nations to work towards achieving the millennium development goals. Goal 8 acknowledges that in order for poor countries to achieve the first 7 goals, it is absolutely critical that rich countries deliver on their end of the bargain with more and more effective aid, sustainable debt relief and fairer trade rules for poor countries — well in advance of 2015.
As a HavServe soccer volunteer, your role will be wide and varied, but there are certain criteria which are most definitely needed including enthusiasm, knowledge of skills and techniques and a warm, approachable manner. You can volunteer in the village of Lebrun on a soccer-coaching project on your gap year, career break or as part of an extended vacation.
Whether you’re on a placement for one, two, three months or more months we will provide a specific coaching program to assist you in your role, and support you all the way. Whenever you choose to volunteer in Haiti, you will rapidly see the impact that you are making on the young people you are working with. At the same time, you will be gaining experience in soccer coaching techniques that will stand out if you should choose to study or work in this area in the future.
You will also have the option to learn Haitian Creole with our local dedicated volunteers.
For the HavServe Haiti Team, sustainable development means meeting Haitians’ needs today (food, shelter, employment, education, etc.) while empowering Haitians to take their future into their own hands. Please support our initiative by creating a personal fundraising page to share your HavServe volunteer initiative in Haiti with friends, family, and in order to network.
Volunteerism by millions of people will be critical to advancing the Millennium Development Goals in Haiti. Please join HavServe as we strive to meet the MDGs in Haiti, village by village, through community-led development.
